An afternoon in Woodstock
Woodstock is one of my favorite places for an engagement session because it offers so much variety within a small area. Historic buildings, quiet lanes, covered bridges, and Green Mountain views create a natural progression without turning the session into a day of travel.
We began in the village while the streets still held the warmth of the afternoon. Walking gave the couple something natural to do and allowed the first photographs to feel conversational rather than posed.
Photographs built around movement
Engagement sessions should feel like time spent together, not a performance for the camera. I use simple direction—walk toward the light, lean into one another, take a slow breath—and then photograph what happens between those prompts.
Movement creates the gestures that make a gallery feel alive: hands finding each other, a dress catching the breeze, or laughter that arrives before either person realizes it.
Choosing what to wear
The best clothing lets you move comfortably and still feels recognizable as your own style. Neutral tones, natural fabrics, and one subtle point of contrast photograph especially well against Woodstock’s mix of architecture and landscape.
Rather than choosing matching outfits, think about balance. One person can wear texture while the other keeps things simple, or one look can feel polished while a second feels relaxed.
Ending in the countryside
We finished beside an open field as the light softened. The pace became quieter, the hills turned hazy, and the final portraits felt completely different from the energy of the village.
That change is what makes Woodstock special. In one session, we can create photographs that feel modern, romantic, playful, and deeply connected to Vermont.
